Indivisible MN03
Indivisible MN03 is a grassroots, constituent-led, all-volunteer group of people from across the political spectrum in Minnesota's third congressional district. We take inspiration from the national Indivisible movement, which uses constituent power to influence legislators throughout the country and hold them accountable for their votes and behavior. The national Indivisible movement was founded after the 2016 U.S. presidential election to oppose authoritarianism and attacks on our democracy.
For 2022, Indivisible MN03 has adopted what we call the ABCs of Congressional District 3, drafted by our board of directors. The ABCs (and a bonus "D") are:
Accountability
Ethical behavior: We expect our elected officials to set examples: Follow the rules, avoid conflicts of interest, and stand against false claims (like vaccine disinformation and the big lie of “stolen” elections).
Accessibility: We expect the right to meet with elected officials at all levels of government, and to obtain public records and meeting notices in a timely manner.
Ballot
Voting rights: We work to expand and defend access to voting, protect election workers and the nonpartisan work they do, and hold accountable those who threaten our democracy.
Campaign finance: We stand for public funding of elections and for the end of unaccountable corporate and dark money in politics. We oppose the Citizens United ruling because corporations are not people.
Information: We know an informed public depends on factual information from the news media, government, libraries, and the internet, without censorship or religious favor.
Climate Justice
Climate change: We acknowledge the critical nature of this threat to humanity and the planet, and its disproportionate impact on communities of color. We advocate for timely and equitable solutions at all levels of government and in the private sector.
Clean energy: We favor clean, renewable energy, sustainable agriculture, and an end to the use of fossil fuels.
Democracy
Diversity, equity, and inclusion: We pledge to listen to those working at every level to identify systemic bias, to be trusted allies, and to oppose the politics of fear, division and hatred which denies the humanity of others.
Education: We support resources for our educators and school boards as they prepare our students for success in a multi-racial, multi-ethnic nation and world.
Constitution and courts: We recognize the Constitution as a nonpartisan, evolving document that supports individual liberties (e.g., privacy, citizenship, reproductive freedom) and community responsibilities (e.g., taxation, health and safety, equity).
What We Do
Legislative Outreach
Our members ask Representative Dean Phillips to vote in ways consistent with our values. We request his support for or opposition to certain pieces of legislation; suggest new bills for his consideration; and attend his quarterly town-hall meetings. Indivisible MN03 also coordinates group-wide actions on issues of particular importance by supplying members with the background and facts needed to communicate knowledgeably and effectively with Rep. Phillips and his staff.
Community Outreach and Relationship Building
Indivisible MN03 sponsors and takes part in activities that build goodwill and generosity within our community. For example, we host workshops, meetings, and other gatherings that connect people and provide them with resources to promote truth, justice, inclusion, and respect. We also participate in events that foster meaningful interactions with community members, especially those from traditionally underrepresented groups.
Election Outreach
Our group uses the Indivisible VAN (Voter Activation Network) to build our base of supporters. We connect directly with fellow constituents via phone calls, text and e-mail messages, and issue-focused visits to neighborhoods throughout District 3.
In addition, we encourage Indivisible MN03 members to run for office or support the campaigns of those who do. In 2018 and 2020, numerous members of our group ran for and were elected to positions in the Minnesota House and Senate; city councils; school boards; and political parties.
